LLMs are fundamentally pattern matchers trained on statistical relationships in text. Counting is an algorithmic task — it needs exact, deterministic steps. LLMs can approximate this for very small numbers (they’ve seen “how many letters in ‘cat’? 3” enough times), but it falls apart quickly as complexity grows.
